It's : It's impossible to know for sure how bad the injury is without an exam and (probably) some x-rays, but in general an ankle sprain that's bad enough to cause bruising (as yours has) is bad enough to be immobilized in a splint or cast and to be non-weightbearing for several weeks.

The risk of doing nothing is that you could wind up with an ankle that is permanently unstable, so i would recommend that you see a doctor.  Going to the er will probably cost a lot more than going straight to an orthopedic surgeon on a scheduled basis.  I doubt he or she will just tell you to go with the rice method, though that will probably be part of your care.

Be on the safe side: After an ankle injury you should see an orthopedist or a board certified podiatrist to make determine the severity of you injury. Often fractures can be present even though you can walk. It is a myth that 'if i can walk on it then it must not be fractured".

Ankle: Sounds like you may have torn something in your ankle. The tingling may be due to nerve compression from the swelling itself. Will probably resolve when swelling goes away. If not call you physician.

The swelling is the bodies way of immobilizing the injured parts and the pain the bodies way of reminding you that you need to do something. Unfortunately, : Unfortunately, with lots of pain and swelling after a fall, it's important to rule out a fracture.  This can only be done with an exam and/or x-ray of the injured foot.  Your doctor or an urgent care facility will likely be cheaper than going to the emergency room.  I would give them a call to ask how much a visit and/or x-ray would cost.  If your foot or ankle is broken, then taking care of it sooner rather than have it heal improperly later is the most economical way to go.

For now: Apply an ice pack, keep it elevated and stay off it. If it's just a simple sprain, you'll feel better tomorrow. If you don't, you need an x-ray, so bring your ankle to either a podiatrist or an orthopedist, both of whom will have x-rays in their office (better than an er), so you can get diagnosed and treated properly. Fall: See your physician regarding the injury.  Have some xrays to evaluate for fracture! rest, ice, elevate in the meanwhile.  Get crutches if need be to relieve during weight bearing.  See your dic asap.
