High and low calcium: Hypoparathyroidisim has low calcium and low PTH (hormone that controls calcium).

Hyperparathyroidis, has high calcium and either high or (abnormally) normal pth.

Yes,: If you have primary hyperparathyroidism (a growth on your parathyroid), the treatment is surgery.  This will cure it.  If you have secondary hyperparathyroidism (kidney disease, vitamin d deficiency), the treatment is to control whatever is causing the parathyroid hormone to be high (replace vitamin d, treat the kidney problem). Sometimes a cure for secondary hyperpara is not possible...

Causes hypopara: Most common cause is injury to the parathyroid glands from head/neck/thyroid surgery.  Other causes include a familial disease called polyglandular autoimmune syndrome (pga 1).  Digeorge syndrome is another genetic disease where you were born with no parathyroid glands.

Three mechanisms.: Hypocalcemia occurs in the absence of parathyroid hormone because of low bone breakdown, loss of calcium in the urine and poor absorption of calcium by the intestine.

:  After making  sure that  it is primary hyperparathyroidism , by performing special tests., they can try medication to help normalize parathormone levels. These include  Vit D,  hormones , bone loss medications like biphosphonates and  calcimimetic medicines which imitate calcium .The definitive treatment would be removal of the  overactive parts of the gland , with careful monitoring and followup

will my untreated hyperparathyroidism decrease my life expectancy?

Accepted Answer

No: Hyperparathyroidism is almost always due to a benign parathyroid adeoma in one of the four glands tucked within your thyroid gland. This shouldn't affect your lifespan. The level of your plasma or serum calcium may. So if it gets higher than about 11.5, consider getting it localized and removed. As always, check with your pmd or endo.

is there any natural way to reverse hyperparathyroidism without surgery?

Accepted Answer

Hyperpara: You can drink a lot of water to try to prevent kidney stones.  You can take drugs like Fosamax (alendronate) to try to prevent bone loss.  There is a drug called sensipar which lowers calcium levels but does not prevent the bone loss.  In short, if you are 41 and have primary hyperparathyroidism, you should probably have surgery.  You should be seen by an endocrinologist who can refer you to a good surgeon.
