Needs evaluation.: A completely normal lymph node will be less than 15mm and have a fatty center. When it enlarges and loses the fatty portion with increased blood flow (hyperemic), it should be sampled with a needle to make sure there is no infection or malignancy within it.

Accepted Answer

In most: instances that size wouldn't be considered enlarged.  However, there are other features(e.g. morphology/shape) that are also important in determining whether a lymph node looks abnormal on ultrasound.  Talk to your doc about it.

my husband got an abdomenal ultrasound done, the report says porta hepatis 16x6mm hypoechoic lymph node found. what are the possible diagnosis?

Lymph nodes: It all depends on what is being looked for. A lymph node that measure over 10mm in one direction is considered abnormal, but it has to correlate with a disease being sought. You both, can talk to the doctor to find out the consideration he was making when the ultrasound was ordered.

Less echogenic: Meaning that the node will generate fewer internal echoes suggesting edema or loss of normal architecture  of the node. The finding in and of itself is non specific and could suggest inflammation, infection, or tumor.

Further workup: Hypoechoic is a finding that pertains to ultrasound findings. They can mean cancer or nothing. But These findings need to be further investigated especially if there is a lesion with local lymph node enlargement.

The significance of this finding varies depending on the context.One example of a hypoechoic mass, seen in the thyroid gland, is a benign tumor called a follicular adenoma. Confusingly, follicular adenomas may also appear hyperechoic, so does not mean one way or another

Lymphadenopathy: you need to get your son checked for the cause of lymph node and make sure the liver and spleen are not enlarged
can be a virus infection or some thing more then that

LN/ tonsils: Where is the swelling? How did the thyroid look like on imaging? What are thyroid functions/antibodis?  The LN could be from the tonsils. Are you having a sore throat? strep?mononucleosis? ear infection? allergies?  If your throat /allergies symptoms resolve over the next month or 2 and the LN does not then consider  a LN biopsy, or thyroid biopsy if there are thyroid nodules. Discuss with doc
