Yes: Usually mild , but definite risk-depends on how well controlled the hypertension is during the pregnancy.  It will also be a future risk for hypertensive cardiovascular disease.

If you have symptoms persisting beyond delivery, it would be called post aclampsia, which should be viewed seriously for potential of complications such as hypertension, seizures and kidney disease. Besides your BP, your OB doctor may want to test your blood for platelets (for clotting ability), urine and BP and you may benefit from meds

Pre-eclampsia: Any activity which may cause elevations in blood pressure in pregnancy, especially with "borderline pre-eclampsia" should be evaluated for continuation by your OB physician.  Pre-eclampsia should be followed closely by your OB physician, as increasing severity may put your pregnancy and the fetus in jeopardy.

No: No. Pre-eclampsia is a range of symptoms and not just elevated blood pressure. If the BP is elevated on multiple exams and additional signs are noted, only then will pre-eclampsia be entertained.

A little different: Gestational hypertension is defined as elevated blood pressure in a pregnant patient after 20 wk who does not have previously diagnosed hypertension. Preeclampsia is the same thing with other changes such as protein leaking into the urine, swelling and some blood test changes. Think of preeclampsia as a more complicated version of gestational hypertension.

Great question; yes.: Current thinking is that both conditions have the same pathophysiology, involving placental release of anti-angiogenic peptides that aim to increase placental perfusion at the expense of maternal well-being. The main difference is proteinuria, which is an indirect measure of maternal renal involvement without correlation to perinatal outcome.

If you are starting out pregnancy with hypertension, you are at greater risk of pre-eclampsia.
