Hydroquinone: No serious side effects have been reported for this topical medication. Side effects when using the medication include: dryness, redness, fissuring, burning, irritation and a contact dermatitis. I rarely see side effects with this medication.

Dark skin: No.  Don't even think about this concept.  There are pigment lighteners for selected areas, but the use of the most powerful one of these is limited to the care of very, very skilled dermatologists.  Don't go down that hazardous road.

In general: the higher percentage concentration will be more effective ... you can't really make up effectiveness with a lower concentration applied over a longer period of time. I understand the 2% strength is available over the counter without a prescription which is probably the basis for your question. The higher 4% strength will be available by prescription; consider making an appointment.

Not Supposed To: Hydroquinone can only be obtained through a prescription from a medical professional. That being said, there may be some websites which are selling hydroquinone without authorization. I would advise against obtaining hydroquinone without a prescription as there can be some damaging effects if it is used improperly and without physician supervision.

Skin: I am unsure what you are really asking. If you are tan and do not want to be, then the safest thing to do is to stay out of the sun and to let the tan fade naturally.  I would advise against any harsh or medical creams to bleach the skin.  Tans fade rapidly when the sun exposure stops.

Unlikely: If it works the result will be modest. Don't use it too early either. Wait until the scar has healed completely.

Skin pigmentation: OTC hydroquinone products are limited to 2% in concentration which may be too low to lighten the skin after a life time of sun exposure. Hydroquinone is not a harmless drug as it may be carcinogenic. You need to see a dermatologist and get effective exfoliation of the damaged layer of the skin to achieve noticeable improvement.

Hypopigmentation: When irritation and inflammation has subsided, pigment may have been lost from the skin if the pigment-containing cells (melanocytes) are damaged or destroyed.  This is called postinflammatory hypopigmentation.

Accepted Answer

Time will tell!: The color of a scarred/damaged area can change over time.  It takes 6 months to a year for the final scar appearance. In the meantime do not get the scar sunburned as that can make the discoloration permanent.  Don't overscrub or pick at the area either.  If the discoloration is still present after a year, then see a plastic surgeon or dermatologist for treatment.  Hopefully the scar' will fade.
