ive had three hsv igg clia blood tests done (4, 6, & 7 months post exposure). hsv 2 is negative but hsv 1 is inconclusive. what do three equivocal hsv 1 (.90) results mean? should i consider this negative or positive? two years ago, it was negative?

: Even if you have HSV 1, also called oral herpes, it is not a serious matter. Majority of the adult have had HSV 1. Other than cold sores, HSV 1 infection is inconsequential, except in rare instances of immune deficiency.

i took two tests not to far apart first test was hsv dna pcr results came back not detected for both types test was done 7/16/21 next was antibodies igg test done the 7/26/21 comes back positive for hsv2 i have no breakouts. which test is right?

Accepted Answer

: The PCR test is positive only if enough virus is present; often negative even in people with HSV, especially if starting to heal before the test was done. The IgG blood tests aren't perfect, however, and the meaning of a positive result depends on how strongly positive it is. Best to find an STD or infectious diseases expert. Or re-post here, with the exact test and the numerical HSV2 result.

what does it mean to have a 4.99 result on hsv 2 igg?

Accepted Answer

If +, HSV exposure: If 4.99 is a positive result, at your lab, that would be consistent with a past exposure to hsv 2.  That  means that you were exposed but, in the absence of symptoms, it won't tell you where your infection is (mouth or genitals).  Generally a type 2 is genital and type 1 is oral, but more than 30% of new genital lesions are caused by type !.  Either way, you do have the potential to shed virus.

Probably yes: If you were treated with anti-herpes drug (acyclovir or valacyclovir) when your HSV1 infection was diagnosed, this could be why your HSV1 blood test has remained negative. Since genital HSV1 recurs infrequently, you probably do not need ongoing treatment. If still taking it, talk with doctor about stopping to see a) if outbreaks occur and how often and b) if your HSV1 blood test becomes positive.

: Is it "bad"? No. It means you have type 1 herpes simplex virus. So so half of all Americans. Most have no symptoms, and mostly the infection is orally (mouth, throat, etc) caught during childhood. Some cases are genital, but genital herpes due to HSV1 usually has few outbreaks and is rarely  transmitted to partners. If you have future oral or genital blisters or sores, get checked at that time.

Need reference range: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that,  Each laboratory usually provides a reference range for the results, i.e, the values seen in normal people. It appears that you have had HSV 1 infection but not HSV 2.

i received a 1.0 result on a hsv igg test, the range is 0.0 to 0.90, should i get retested?

Accepted Answer

Why do you ask?: Do you have herpes lesions? That's the real question. The antibodies are just to support the clinical impression. This lab result is a "definite maybe" on which your physician will base a decision to treat or not.

my relative's results came back with an hsv 2 igg of 4.96  which is way outside of the range. he is worried. are there other more accurate tests?

Accepted Answer

Unsure: What you describe is normal for someone who has had a past exposure to HSV 2 and has developed an antibody to that particular virus.  When the IgG is elevated, it may indicate that the body is actively fighting that virus.  This test is quite accurate for indicating past exposure to HSV 2.

Accepted Answer

Not formed yet: The bodies initial response is with igm, which is less specific. The immune system then produces permanent antibodies igg, which appear around 3 months.
Blood test has to be ordered for type specific igg type i or type ii.

i just got my hsv-1igg type spec ab, igg w/rfx test results and i'm having trouble understanding the results the index value was 1.06h does that mean positive or negative?

Accepted Answer

: A value of 1.06 for IgG for HSV means a recent or present infection with HSV, but does not equate to having a skin lesion.
