Its appears to be a multifactorial diease that is influenced by genetics but may also occur sporadically without any family history. There has been recent data to show that viyamin e may increase chances of getting cancer but there are no other specific links thus far.

61 to 70 years: 14% to 70%
71 to 80 years: 31% to 83%
81 to 90 years: 40% to 73%.

It is useful when biopsy is negative with high psa level, to monitor micro disease, and after treatment, .

You can treat it!: It depends on what kind of treatment you received - surgery,  radiation and/or hormonal therapy.  Some degree of ed occurs right after prostatectomy. If the nerve-sparing technique is used, recovery from ed may occur within the first year post surgery. 
Treatment options for ed post prostate therapy include:
-oral medication
-intracavernous injection therapy
-vacuum assisted device
-penile implant.

There are some personal risks which can be avoided (like smoking and lung cancer or sun exposure and skin cancer), but most cancers are personal accidents and bad luck. There is no specific trigger for prostate cancer but treatment is available.  Your classmate probably is seeing a urologist for this.

Long terem survivors do have higher thaexpected incidences of new tumors, perhaps due to treatment, including xrt.
