i have slow colonic transient. i've been on miralax w/prune juice as prescribed for a year. it causes loose stools. my doctor prefers that. is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes: it is safe, however if you are not having an appropriate response, different treatment options exist (including prescribed medications such as Amitiza, Linzess). You should re-discuss with your doctor.

recently found out have low potassium, added 2 banana's, orange juice and tomoato juice to diet but causing loose stools, concerned counterproductive?

Why is it low?: Do you know why is it low? 
Is it because you're on medicines that artificially lower it? There are rare genetic conditions that can lower potassium?

Or was this a random lab finding. If it was a random finding, realize potassium levels can fluctuate moment to moment. Also machines have error too. If its borderline low, don't go nuts with a high potassium diet. 
If it's markedly low, talk to doc!

Acidosis: When one has severe diarrhea or takes too many laxatives there is a resulting change in the balanced pH of the blood referred to as hyperchloremic acidosis.  The diminution of bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) levels lost in the liquid stool results in this problem and must be compensated by minimizing or controlling the diarrhea and taking alkaline material P.O to return the blood pH to normal.

how do you treat diarrhea in a child under 3?

Depends on how ill: For a child 1-2 years old with diarrhea (with or without vomiting), the amount of liquid a child drinks is even more important the what he is drinking. Small, frequent sips (while awake) work the best. That may mean 1/2 ounce (15 ml) every 30 minutes for a child with more diarrhea, to 2 ounces (60 ml) every hour for a baby with less diarrhea. Pedialyte works better than half-strength gatorade.

i have had diarrhea for a week and i think i have developed dehydration how do i treat it at home and not go to the hospital? is it severe?

If you are well: enough to be on the internet, it doesn't sound like a trip to the hospital is necessary.  You may have some mild dehydration.  The trick is to not overdo it.  Small amounts of fluids frequently are needed to rehydrate yourself.  Try to avoid sugary drinks and fruit juices.  They have a laxative effect.  Gatorade, sports drinks are good.  If this persists, or becomes bloody, fever...then see a doc.

Consult Physician: Especially if medication did not help gout. Probably need to stop medication.

This is possibly: Ibs, which is often a reaction to stress.  There are medications and psychological treatments that can help.

C. difficile : Clindamycin is notorious for causing a C difficile colitis. You may want to be evaluated for this possibility.

Feed hrough: If your son has recent diarrhea initially just feed through it.  It usually resolves itself.  For more serious diarrhea especially with vomiting a balanced electrolyte (fluids salts and sugar) may be helpful.  Rice, apples and bananas can be binding.

DIARRHEA: Infants with lbm, depending on age, below 3 months give pedialyte, rice water and soy milk. Below 1 year, aside from the above give the brat diet ( banana, rice , apple, tea) no juice. You can also give jello, sprite, 7up. There is a diet instruction you can get from the clinic.
