i was on xifaxan (rifaximin) for 2 weeks. it made my stomach area bloat with water. i finished the antibiotic 6 days ago but am still bloated. why? is this normal

Yes: Yes bloating can be from increased air /gas in colon and tew change in bacterial flora (mixture of bacteria in the colon).If not improved in 2 or 3 weeks see a doctor

Gut flora: Antibiotics can change the the bacteria of the intestine and this can cause bloating or even diarrhea.  I always recommend that patients on antibiotics take a probiotic.  If symptoms persist, you may need to be tested for clostridium difficile.

i was diagnosed with a uti been on antibiotics for three days. my stomach continues to bloat. i have pain in my right side when i begin to urinate. is this normal for a uti? i'm female 31 and have had a tubal.

Need re-evaluation: While your symptoms may indicate a severe attack of urinary infection, it should be at least getting better with medication. If you see no improvement you may revisit your doctor and discuss if further analysis of Urine by culture is necessary to determine the exact medication for your type of bacteria.

Dont worry: Take 4 dulcolax tablets at night (all 4 as one dose). Next morning you will have good bm. And will clean your system. Then take Reglan (metoclopramide) 10 mg, one tablet every night for 2 weeks.

Bloating: If your abdomen is actually distended and especially if painful and you're unable to have a bowel movement, intestinal obstruction or paralysis would be a concern. If you note no improvement, see your physician or go to the hospital emergency room where prompt evaluation is available.

Constipation: Unfortunately the anesthetic agents, the surgery and the post operative pain management all contribute to constipation. Which can cause multiple abdominal complaints, including bloating. Okay to increase your oral liquids, decrease the narcotics, use laxatives to achieve two soft bowel movements daily. Make your post operative appointment and discuss with your surgeon.

Diet Problems: Altho probiotics may help, the best answer is to identify what in her diet is causing the digestive problems.Although there are many possibilities, that you can identify with an elimination diet, the most common cause is the onset of a dairy intolerance.Eliminate all dairy products for 5 days and see what happens.And discuss this with your pediatrician.

Other conditions: there is no test for the diagnosis of IBS. it is important to exclude other conditions like Celiac Disease, intolerance to lactose/sucrose /fructose or inflammatory bowel disease which can present with the same symptoms.  IBS responds well to diet, antispasmodics, probiotics and perhaps anti anxiety medications. advice to see a gastroenterologist for further testing.

Coat stomach: Gastritis is common with many antibiotics, 
ask your dr. If its ok to eat or have a glass of milk before the particular antibiotic you are taking.  Taking on an empty stomach is difficult for many people.

Congratulations: If you are one of the triplets asking for her, your mom did well not only in the pregnancy but also in raising you! now it is time for her to take care of herself :) the first step is to have gyn exam to find possible cause for bloating and get advice re exercise program and healthy diet. Next she could lay out a plan for how, where, when to work out. Then you all can help free her up to do it!
