Muscle Strain: If you are an active swimmer, you may have a mild muscle strain resulting in your discomfort. In the absence of any shortness of breath or radiation of your pain to the jaw or left arm, taking a few days off from the aggravating routine, increasing hydration with water and a trial of NSAIDs may help.

my throat hurts when i inhale deeply. happens when i exercise vigorously or inhale deeply on purpose (i.e. before attempting to swim underwater for a long time). pain can cause me to cough.

Get a check up.: Throat pain can have a variety of causes and needs to be examined to give a more accurate answer. One of the common reasons is inflammation of the throat secondary to silent reflux of acid. Please see an ENT for examination and getting an accurate diagnosis.

Not much to do: Not much to do to help babies at this age.  Antibiotics do not kill viral colds and will not help.  Cold medications are not approved for use at this age either.  You can try nasal saline and bulb suctioning to get the snot out.  I find that sitting in a hot, steamy shower (the water should not touch the baby - just sit in the steam) with the baby upright to get the snot to flow out, will help.

Not necessarily.....: A cold is usually the result of an upper airway infection while a cough can be the result of a lower respiratory infection. However, you can also get a cough from post-nasal drip, which can be due to an upper airway infection. Usually, though, symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat will precede the post-nasal drip cough. When in doubt, see your doctor.

Virus/ allergy/ bac: There are many viruses, allergens and bacteria that can cause a cold and a cough. Most people will improve with time and many meds can help with symptoms. If symptoms persist more than 1 or 2 weeks or if they are severe seek out your doctor for help. Hope you feel better soon.

Tea/sinus wash: Honey lemon tea is supposed to help.
Doing a sinus irrigation can help a lot. Sometimes some benadryl at night can dry you up a bit which calms the cough down.

Hands.,..: Typically, an upper respiratory infection occurs after the bacteria or virus gets on your hand and then you touch your eyes/nose/mouth. The bacteria or virus then multiplies until you develop symptoms of infection. This is the reason that frequent hand washing helps to decrease the infection rate. A cough due to infection is transmitted the same way.

If you aspirate : Usually not, unless one aspirates the liquid or one has an allergy to the drink. Any food or liquid can precipitate a cough if it accidentally contacts the vocal cords during an abnormal swallow, .
