what is causing pain in my arm from throwing a football?

It depends: Without knowing what part of your arm hurts, this is a difficult question to answer.  It could be anything from tendonitis, to muscle strain/sprain, or arthritis.  See your doctor so that he or she can determine the cause of the pain and decide what treatment is best for you.

The question is...: Whether you permanently injured your arm as a child?   Or whether you spent more time throwing a ball at age 11 than at age 47?  Consider rephrasing the question.

threw football for 2 hours without warming up. back of shoulder near shoulder blade has been sore for over a month but can do things like lift arm over head. doing shoulder strengthening exercises is painful. is this a sign of something serious?

Shoulder Pain: There are several possibilities ranging from strain to rotator cuff tear.  Please see your doctor.  He/she will diagnose and help.  Peace and good health.

Rest, ice &amp; NSAID's: your symptoms suggest tendinitis &amp; lateral epicondylitis as possible diagnosis.  Advise to rest your arm, ice the area &amp; take 1-2 weeks otc aleve/naproxen 225 mg twice daily with food unless contraindicated based on your medical conditions. Alternative is advil/ibuprofen 400-600 mg 3x/day with meals depending on your weight.   See orthopedist if no better or symptoms worsen.  Pls rest arm

Go see your doctor: You should go see your doctor, an orthopedic one preferably, right away.  You may have a fracture, torn ligaments, or nerve impingement.

Accepted Answer

Not a good idea: Anything sufficient to protect your healing bone under the cast would be so inhibiting that your football skills would be minimal. Anything less would risk your healing and a non-union of a bone is an ordeal best avoided if possible.

To immobilize a broken collarbone, you usually need to wear an arm sling. The length of time immobilization is needed depends on the severity of the injury. Union of the bone usually takes three to six weeks for children and 6 to 12 weeks for adult.

i fell funny on my arm last sunday at american football went hospital and they xrayed my elbow and showed no break but my arm is still in emence pain?

Second opinion: If you are having overwhelming pain, go to the ER and have them re-x-ray the elbow. You may also need an MRI and pain medication.
