No can do: If you plan ahead, you can alter the way you take birth control pills to control when your period is going to come.  If you're not on the pill or are in the middle of your period, there's really no way to stop it for a night.

you don't: The period is not going to stop once it begins.  You could potentially shorten the period by starting the pill - the increasing estrogen is what eventually stops the bleeding in the normal cycle.

Nobody's perfect: and neither are your menstrual cycles.  The hormones that control your menstrual cycle can be off kilter from time to time and can cause irregular bleeding.   If the spotting persists beyond one cycle or if bleeding becomes heavy, you should get a check up. An off cycle: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

: Typically women bleed about  5  days with first 3 days reported as heavier. Anovulatory cycles were followed by decreased blood loss and shorter menses length. Higher FSH and progesterone levels are associated with heavier menstrual bleeding. There is no known pathology associated with bleeding patterns specific to time of day. Suspect has more to do with level of activity. Talk to your doc.
