help! what can i help a kidney stone pass? pain is managed ok not well but don't want to stay in hospital. is there anything to speed up the process?

Kidney stone: Stones have a life of their own. Depending on size, less than 5mm, configuration(oval, jagged, or wedge shaped) and location, stones can pass rapidly within a few hours or may take several days or weeks. Fluids can help and Flomax or tamsulosin has been found to help passage of stones. As long as your pain is controlled and there is no infection, you can allow the stone to pass. Discuss with urol.

Size of stone: unfortunately kidney stones is a miserable experience . Depending on size up to 4 to 5 mm can be passes by gitting flomax (tamsulosin). 0.4 mg daily. Ivp , pain killers, fluids with oily content( like parsly boiled and drank, non alcoholic beer, smooth muscle relaxants and anti anxiety like small dosis of Valium ( 2 to 5 ) mg at bed time. These shown great help . But the best is to try avoid formation of stone

Drink water: Drink enough water so that your urine is colorless. Flow of urine may facilitate the passage of stones. You need to keep up high intake of water to prevent more stones from forming.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Yes.: It is possible to pass a 6.4mm stone.  Stone passage is related to stone size and stone location.
Stones of this size have an approximately 50% chance of pasing spontaneously.  Medication might help. Otherwise, lithotripsy might be necessary.  Discuss with your urologist.

People who have never had a kidney stone should get checked out by their doctor to make sure the diagnosis is correct.  People who have these regularly usually recognize them and know what to do.  Anyone with fevers, extreme pain, or symptoms that last longer than a day or two should see a doc.

Renal colic.: That's a very small stone, and should pass from the ureter into the bladder readily.  That's not to say it won't get stuck along the way, and when these so tes get stuck they hurt a lot.  Drinking a lot of water will make you produce a lot of urine, thereby dilating the ureter and facilitating the movement of this stone.

Maybe: Several factors, mainly stone size and patient anatomy, determine if a stone can pass.  Above ~5mm, the risk rises sharply that a stone gets stuck in the ureter and requiring intervention.  But the largest stone i've seen passed was 16mm (!) in a pregnant woman.  Bottom line is nobody can predict this with certainty.  Stay hydrated and  see a urologist, so you have someone to help if/when needed.

Small chance: The chance of a kidney stone passing spontaneously is inversely related to stone size.  According to studies, there is about a 10% chance of a 9 mm stone passing on its own.  In practice, there is a generally accepted cutoff of 5 mm for which there is a reasonable chance (50-70%) of passing.  Depending on individual level of pain and other factors, a urologist may opt for conservative management.
