Contraceptioin: Ovarian cysts are very common and occur in ovulating women. Most cysts are benign and asymptomatic. When a patient has pain from recurrent cysts, it is reasonable to discuss birth control which stops the ovary from ovulating. You should talk with your doctor about whether this would work in your situation.

Ovarian cysts: The use of oral contraceptives offer protection from the majority of ovarian cysts, secondary to supression of hormonal activity in the pituitary gland, which makes the ovary not produce eggs, but essentially stops cyst formation as well.  This should be discussed with your health care professional , as your history and family history may play a major role in the decision to use this therapy.

Ovarian follicles: Many ovarian follicles or cysts are normal. This is where a egg is released from during ovulation. A follicle needs to grow to about 2 CM for a mature egg to be released. Sometimes a cyst can burst or bleed and this may cause sudden onset of pain.

A fluid collection: Most women of child bearing years have collections of fluid in the ovaries surrounded by a thin wall of tissue. This is an ovarian cyst and is common during each menstrual cycle. In most cases these are benign. Diet and exercise do not play a role as far as we know in reducing the risk of having a cyst. Speak with your gynecologist or primary care physician if you have further questions.

Ovarian cyst ?'s: Ovarian cysts are common in women who are not on oral bcp's .  Most are benign and will resolve spontaneously.  A biopsy may be indicated if there is internal structure in the cyst seen by ultrasound exam.  Endometriosis can also cause both pain and ovarian cyst formation, so consult your gyn physician if your symptoms are persistent.

No: The oral contraceptive pill is used to help prevent future ovarian cysts by eliminating ovulation.

No: Quarterly Depoprovera (DMPA) shots, monthly Nuvaring, and Weekly OrthoEvra Patches also prevent ovulation and may reduce cyst formation.  Nexplanon also inhibit ovulation, but there is no strong evidence regarding functional cyst formation/prevention.

i had 8cm ovarian cyst and endometrial tissue removed. is it necessary to take hormones such as lupron (leuprolide) to prevent a reoccurence?

Accepted Answer

No: Lupron (leuprolide) will help prevent recurrence while you are on it. However, Lupron (leuprolide) is usually used short term and it may recur after you stop it. Drugs such as birth control pills can be used long term and so may be more helpful.  Still, going on hormones after surgery is not absolutely necessary.

i have ovarian cyst pain and suffer from migraines with aura, so beside the birth control is there anything else to prevent cysts from coming regulary?

It's good to know they are not dangerous, but there is no reliable prevention and this is from the folks who really love prevention. Pain relief may be possible - ask your Dr(s). Also, accupressure, hypnosis, other non-medical ideas may help.
