hi doctors, was just wondering what is a horse shoe kidney and is that dangerous for the body?

Horseshoe shape: Not dangerous. Right ; left kidney are fused together at the lower end. Isthmus or junction between the kidneys can be of variable thickness varying from think kidney tissue to just a fibrous band. Not dangerous. Can be cause of microscopic hematuria (blood in urine), occasionally responsible for mid-abdominal pain. Can be associated with hydronephrosis due to mild partial ureteral obstruction.

Potentially nothing: A horseshoe kidney is a developmental anomaly of the kidneys where the lower ends are joined together.  This means that the joined kidneys tend to be located somewhat lower than "normal" kidneys.  In addition, there tends to be a higher risk of having associated drainage issues of the kidneys and potentially kidney stones as well.   See a urologist for an evaluation.

They may : Not be supportive - I am not familiar with the particular style of shoe

Not recommended: Runner shoes are not built to sustain sudden side to side movement needed in tennis. Greater risk of injury. If you don't have tennis shoes, at least use "cross trainers".

Accepted Answer

Spikes & Sports: The answer is yes and no.  Shoes with "traction enhanced" surfaces came into vogue as sports participation evolved onto different artfiicial playing fields.  Slips often caused hyperextension injuries.  Rotational injuries are more common today due to force transmission up the leg to the knee and hip courtesy of a well entrenched foot.  A well conditioned athlete can compensate with training.

my 8 year old son has horse shoe kidneys with his right kidney only having 35% function and his left kidney only has 65% function. so he is basically one kidney. what is the risk of me sending him back to school and getting sick?

Hard to say: There are many who live their normal lives with a single kidney. Many donate one as a living donor to someone in need. The numbers you list suggest the kid adds up to one full kidney. I would surely not let him engage in horse riding, wrestling or other sports that risk his kidney. Whether or not  there are other school based risks you are worried about is not evident in your post.

Hair traction: I have never heard of this occurence so i think if you have any other symptoms such as visual changes you should see your physician.

Right shoes: It is important to wear proper shoes for your sport.Basketball shoes have stable sides to help prevent the foot and ankle from rolling outward and provide for better push off.

i got surgery done on my pinky toe and i have a walking shoe. i can't walk in it without looking like a horse! it doesn't bend! how do i walk normal ?

Talk to your doctor: Usually the surgical shoe is meant to accomodate the dressing.  Ask your doctor if you could use an old sneaker that could be cut open instead.   Depending on the type of procedure done, that may be fine.

yesterday i was playing basketball with a tight shoe for 2 hrs. after the game i noticed bleeding on my socks and my toenails hurt. anything i can do?

Throw out the shoes: The shoes are too small for you and causing trauma.  Neosporin or another ointment will help heal the nails, but the biggest factor is prevention by getting shoes that fit.  Shoes should allow wiggle room for toes and a thumb's width of length from the LONGEST toe.
