i (21f) woke up unable to pass a large hard stool and took milk of magnesia (30ml dose on bottle) to soften it, was that a bad idea? it started with a couple soft stools but then constant watery crampy stools all day long after, should i see doctor?

: Milk of Mag is a laxative, not a stool softener. Laxatives stimulate peristalsis, the rhythmic squeezing, and relaxation of the muscles in the intestinal wall that propel the contents along. It is also the source of cramping. If your original problem wasn't due to a stomach bug then the effects of 30 ml of MOM will pass soon enough. Its important to drink tons of water to keep up with the diarrhea

Hard stool: In this case you don't take laxatives but instead work from below. Try using rectal glycerin suppositories. If not effective, try dulcolax rectal suppositories or a fleets enema. Bowel: Try using stool softener regularly for a few weeks. You could be having an anal fissure. The first stool coming out is  usually harder. If symptom is persisting you need evaluation by a doctor.

i was hvng normal bms & last night i had stool too large to pass. i took a warm shower & was able to brake pieces apart. later had an urge & pushed out more & had liquidy stool aftr i thnk i got it out but anal is sore cud there be more hard stool?

Anal pain: Go to your Dr and ask for a rectal exam and blood test of stool. Use vasoline till then.

my son having an age of two and a half years having a problem of constipation after every week. and thus when he passes the stool its size is big and hard .we are giving him freash milk of cow and buffalo?what we do?

Milk: Milk is constipating. Please have our son evaluated by a children's medical specialist, a Pediatrician. His diet may be doing him harm, but there may be other causes. See a Pediatrician and have him properly evaluated. Stop trying to do this on your own. Get help.

Try: Glycerine suppository and after insertion ly on your left side for 20 -30 minutes before trying to have a bm. You can repeat the suppository in 3-4 hours if no result from the first. Sometimes a mineral oil enema can also help, but if unsuccessful with the above consider a trip to your doctor or the er.

Maybe: This depends greatly on why the stool is hard, other medical problems, and what you have already used. The best remedy is plenty of water, which can help to soften stool. Physical activity can also help. Assuming no severe intestinal pathology, there is little reason to avoid stool softeners like docusate, or non-stimulant laxatives like miralax (polyethylene glycol).

Isolated/recurrent: It makes a significant difference if these are constant vs isolated. Diet, hydration and regular physical exercise, such as running/jogging are critical in preventing such episodes. Once constipation occurs use of laxatives may be needed from prune juice, senna to suppositories, such as Dulcolax. Feel free to address with your physician at your next visit.

Taking calcium?: Are you taking calcium supplement since this tends to induce constipation and leaves white specks?  If this is the case, adding magnesium to the mix may help relieve this problem.

Diet: Most of the time hard stools indicate lack of fiber in diet, best treatment is to make sure that  one eats more fruit / vegetables and plenty of water and also less red meat.
Also stool softners like colace (docusate sodium) or 
fiber supplement like metamucil helps to bulk up the stool and makes it easy to pass.
