i can make my ears pop voluntarily without moving. its addicting like popping your knuckles. will this damage my ears?

No: The ear tympanum can become weak from overuse and poor nutrition. Occasional dehydration can also permit  as popping noise against the small bones behind the tympanum.  Eat good quality oils and fats and stay well hydrated, especially when changing elevation.  This should lessen the urge and loosen the knuckles a bit too.

Breathe...: Your ears are probably popping because your holding your breath during your reps, increasing pressure in the nasopharyngeal area.  Breathe.  Breathe!!  Breathe out when moving the weight and inhale when bringing the weight back to the resting position.

ETD: It sounds like you are having trouble equalizing the pressure in your middle ear. This often creates a fullness, like you want to pop or clear your ears. It is called eustachian tube dysfunction (etd). Decongestant either sprayed into the nose or taken orally can alleviate this problem. Sometimes your doctor needs to examine this and treat with other rx if no success with otc rx.

Ears Popping: The eustacian tubes open up as needed to keep the pressure normal behind the eardrums. The muscles uses to do this are also associated with swallowing. Sometimes when you swallow, these muscle will open the eustacian tubes, causing the popping.
