Breakthrough bleed: It sounds like this is breakthrough bleeding. Especially on low dose OCPs, sometimes the lining of the uterus becomes unstable and breaks down, causing bleeding. It usually corrects itself, and it does not reduce the birth control aspect of the pill. If it keeps happening, you may need to change pills.

To stop the shots: The brown spotting and/or brown discharge are pretty common side effects of Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone). After the last shot of Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone), it can take over 6 months for the drug to leave the body. During this period women also could experience brown discharge which could linger until the Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) is completely gone.

Can be: This is a relatively common side effect of the Nexplanon.  As long as any other source is ruled out (infection, vaginal irritation) then it is more of an annoyance than a problem

Yes: The brown discharge is usually old blood that is related to the hormonal effect of the birth control on the uterus that can cause some spotting. If the discharge is foul smelling it may be an infection that you need to be evaluated for. The discharge usually clears up after you have been in the pill for a few months.

Will slowly improve: The bloody discharge of menses can harbor bacteria which naturally clears itself as the flow ends. Avoid scented pads/tampons as the scent products may adversely affect vaginal pH. Avoid wipes(same pH issue).  Change pads, tampons &amp; underwear often; regularly shower. A generalized body spray, not directly on the vaginal area, is often helpful. Persistent odor suggests infection &amp; should be checked

Consider everything: Implantation bleeding may mimic a period and spotting can happen normally in some patients. However - Pregnancy is always a possibility. Spotting with or without pregnancy occurs in many women and can be a sign of infection, trauma, or can be normal. A home pregnancy test may be helpful in this situation. For any additional concerns, see a health professional to evaluate for other reasons.
