Potentially: The nerves in that area are fairly superficial and can be injured in a blunt injury.  Should resolve pretty quickly, if not I would not hesitate to be seen.

Sounds like fungis: Keep in mind... The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured.  It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future.

It depends: Why they are dark? It can be fungus? It can be dried blood, it can be bacterial colononization. Usually, a podiatrist or dermatologist may sample the nail and material under the nail to arrive at a diagnosis and then base therapy on that pathology report.

Fungus: Trauma and various dermatologic problems can cause thickening and darkening of nails, but the most common cause is toenail fungus. Dermatophyte fungi infect the nail, essentially eating it and discarding the debris underneath. This causes the nail to thicken and discolor. The most effective treatment is oral antifungal medication. Lasers have become popular, but are expensive and not permanent.

Depends: It may depend on what color your natural skin color is. Some dark skinned individuals have dark gray streaks in their toenails fingernails. However there are other causes of it which may include a hematoma or melanoma or fungal infection. Have your podiatrist check it out.

Infection: If a single nail is becoming discolored, you could be coming down with a fungal infection.  You should see your primary care doctor who can do a culture and confirm the diagnosis.

: Without seeing said spot, and with no description as to cause it is impossible to say for sure. Possible blood clot or beginnings of a fungus infection. Sometimes a lesion can be under the nail. Get it checked to rule out a possibility of a serious lesion
