Dark area on toenail that has persisted for a while. what is this?

Without seeing said spot, and with no description as to cause it is impossible to say for sure. Possible blood clot or beginnings of a fungus infection. Sometimes a lesion can be under the nail. Get it checked to rule out a possibility of a serious lesion
