: It makes it MUCH less likely that the herpes will spread to you.  As in much of medicine, nothing is absolute.  Spread is less likely, not impossible

Probably not very: well. Better to throw the toothbrush away after you disinfect it to protect others, who may want to use it after you've throw it away. Need something stronger than that. Get a new toothbrush for peace of mind. You can afford it. In fact, you can't afford not to!

When the virus is just beginning to multiply, the sensation on the affected area can provide a signal to start the antiviral medication (Acyclovir or Valtrex) then, which generally reduces the time of painful ulcer

: Probably it would kill the virus, but it wouldn't matter if it doesn't. People are immune to new infections with the virus type they already have, and nobody with oral HSV1 ever transmits it to her own genital area. You need take no special precaution with laundry or anything else.

Up to 3 - 4 hours: It's possible, but not super likely. You have to have a pretty large quantity of virus hanging out on the inanimate object (say for instance a straw), and it has to come into direct contact with your mucous membrane (say for instance your lips), for transmission to occur. Hours to weeks: Longer if a dry surface. You are contagious when you have a sore on your face. But you are also contagious a few days a month when you have no symptoms at all. Since most people already have the virus hsv1, it has no effect on them. Prescription pills are very effective if used correctly, and very safe. Most people who harbor the virus require no treatment since they have no symptoms.
