You can: You can. The question I have is why now at age 47? Rarely the lingual frenum contributes to the loss of tissue behind the lower front teeth.
Most commonly the procedure is performed on children with a "tied tongue" causing a speech impediment.

Frenctomy post treat: Yes. Is your space now present? If so get space closed first as scar tissue may form and keep the teeth from coming together.

Ask your Dr: I see no reason not to do both if your doctor is up for it. I find it a bit unusual for anyone old enough to have wisdom teeth to consider this procedure(usually done in infancy). Some find it cosmeticly bothersome to have limited tongue protrusion, but if your speach is clear i wouldn't put it on a list of must haves.

Good Care takes time: If you want to have an excellent result, many times it may take time. Many people can do "accelerated orthodontics" that may take approximately 6 months. It may only address the appearance of your teeth. Proper alignment of the teeth and the bite may take longer. Also be aware that there may be a habit that is causing your gaps. For example, a tongue thrust (habit during swallowing and speaking)

Simple to do: Generally, in young babies this is done with a snip in clinic under local anesthetic.  

In older babies and young children it is done in the operating room with anesthetic gas and a snip, possibly with melting sutures. 

 In teens and adults, it can often be done in clinic with some numbing medicine and a snip.  I'd put a few melting stitches as well.  They can return to school/work right after.

Removal: The suffix "ectomy" means removal.  A fenumectomy is the removal of part of the frenum.  The labial frenum is the muscle on the inner part of the upper lip.  The lingual frenum is the muscle that attaches the under part of the tongue to the bone in the front of the mouth.

Frenectomy: A frenectomy is the surgical procedure to remove or relocate the muscular attachment between the lip and the attached gum and bone of the jaw. This is done when there is a diastema or space between teeth and it is this situation is considered a contributing factor for the space. Having said that, the frenectomy will not necessarily close the space nor is it always necessary. Each case is different.

Not too long: Usually there is pain like a canker sore in the mouth for 1 to 10 days.  Using some dental numbing gel on the area can help. Babies can use some infant tylenol (acetaminophen) and toddlers and above can use children's Motrin for pain as well.  The diet doesn't have to be restricted after the procedure.  Good luck!
