If you are already: a physician you can obtain additional training to become a 'medical acupuncturist'. This is usually about 300 hours of training. Acupuncture is taught as a part of a number of master's programs and as part of doctorate in Traditional Chinese medicine.

Acupuncture : I did once. Another acupuncturist & i were practicing ear points. In order to become familiar with pts, she put in many, many needles in my ears (far more than we would ever do for treatment).  It was very overstimulating to the bowel. There are specific protocols to help move material through the colon that could lead to lose stool. However, no, in general, acupuncture does cause this as a se.

Acupuncture: can be very beneficial in the treatment of migraine and other types of headaches.  Twirling the needle rapidly during Chinese  Scalp Acupuncture will stimulate the underlying brain structures to impact motor or sensory function of different areas of the body.

Acupuncture: Is an excellent approach to anxiety. Suggest that it be combined with cognitive behavioral therapy or some other form of treatment to ensure long lasting effects.

Yes: Accupuncture has millions of followers, and there are lots of studies showing the usefulness of accupuncture in pregnancy.  The most common uses for pregnancy accupuncture include: muscle and joint pain; morning sickness and hyperemesis; back pain and pelvic pain; even anesthesia during labor!

Yes: But you want to see someone who is experienced with pregnant women.  If it is a treatment that can be delayed until after delivery that might be better.

Yes: If the acupuncture needle sticks a nerve and is moved around.  The needles should not  be placed near a nerve.

Always possible: There are many treatment options.
You will need to discuss this with your DR.

I would consult: with a neurosurgeon  or an orthopedic surgeon to know if you are a surgical candidate or not. I perform  acupuncture on many patients who are not surgical candidates  or patients whom the neurosurgeon desires to wait before  doing surgery.

i had my first session of acupuncture for stress and insomnia and i am worse than ever! does one get worse before better?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes: Symptoms may become worse occasionally after acupuncture before they get better. Usually no change is the worst prognosis after a needling session.
