Get checked out: It could be many things.  Scabies, yeast, reaction to condoms.  I would change condoms (if you're using them), try an over the counter jock itch medication and if not better see a urologist.

See dermatologist: Its likely hyper pigmentation for rubbing as you question. If that area is being traumatized day its likely to get pigmented just a s a child who falls to their knees gets dark knees. The exam would help identify the problem

Tinea : Jock itch or tinea cruris is common.  This typically will respond to topical antifungal which you can get at the pharmacy. 
Terbinafine or butenafine are common agents.

Typically oral antifungal meds such as lamisil, (terbinafine) gris peg, Diflucan for 45 days in combination with topical antifungal creams gels or lotions can kill the fungus fairly effectively.   Often a bacterial component is present and a antibiotic pill or cream must be added as well.

Fungus lives : In dark, wet, moist areas. Hence, if your carpet is dry, I don't think it lives there long. I can not give you any exact time as I simply do not know.

Fungus: It is not killed by alcohol.  Fungus is a spore forming organism that can live 6 months or more when not in contact with a host .  It is susceptible to heat  , so steam cleaning will kill it as will lysol and other cleaners .

Probably: Try lotrimin (clotrimazole) cream for a couple of weeks.  Use gloves to apply and check the rest of your body for other areas of involvement, particularly your feet.
