Nasal Saline/Fluids: If your child has nasal congestion, nasal saline drops and gently suctioning out the mucus will help with post nasal drip and cough. For prolonged fever, trouble breathing, prolonged cough, a physician visit is recommended.
Monitor his fever and provide fluids to keep your child well hydrated.

Try these tips:: Avoid milk as it can increase mucus production in many people.  Increase your water intake to help loosen the phlem.  Take a hot shower and breathe the steam or boil water on the stove.  Many hots teas are soothing such as mullen and honey.  Do not give honey to children or infants.  Any cough lasting longer than one week should be evaluated by a doctor just in case infection is present.

My Pleasure: Steam Inhalation . Ginger tea, Gargle with salt and warm water. 
 Advil or Aleve for sore throat, Headache and fever.
Mucinex DM for expectoration and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for Congestion.
Camomile tea at night for help sleep.

Cold home remedies: 1.) Lots of fluids. 2) Use a humidifier or inhale steam/steamy shower (careful) 3) Saline nasal sprays or homemade salt nasal rinses. 4) Rest as much as possible 5)Salt water gargles 6)Hot drinks, tea, tea with honey or even whiskey 7) Extra pillow to elevate head 8) Small dabs of mentholated rub under nose 9) Zinc and Vit. C.  This is all I ever do for colds. OTC meds don't work plus side effects
