Time varies: Varied times for different STDs. Gonorrhea and chlamydia 2-3 days. 1-2 weeks for vaginal infections like trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis, 4-6 weeks for syphilis and HIV blood tests. If no symptoms, do it all at 4-6 weeks. Herpes (HSV) testing takes up to 3-4 months, but usually not recommended after any single exposure unless there are symptoms or partner is know to have herpes.

The swabs can be sent for culture, dna probes, or nucleic acid amplification tests (naats).  Those are the "big 3, " but there are other stds.
