Yes: Leukemia can affect a child if any age , with the most common leukemia, ALL, occurring between the ages of 2 and 9, however, if the child is outside that range, the chances of more severe leukemia increase. : Common things are more common than the rare. Bruising usually represents the effect of local trauma. Bruises that appear in unlikely locations can represent several things. Get some  lab work done to sort this out. Worrying won't help the kid. Even the terrible leukemia is different today than 4 decades ago. Survival has gone from 10% to 80% in that interval.

Usually just happens: Leukemia is actually a rare disease, but because it is so devastating, those few cases make us much more aware of it. You can not catch leukemia from someone who has it and unless you have significant exposure to radiation or chemotherapy, your chances are quite low of contracting it. There are a few families where cancer and leukemia have higher incidences and genetic counseling should be sought.

No one knows: Only in rare circumstances do we actually know the cause. Those times would be if the child was previously treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy, if there is a known genetic problem like down's syndrome or in a few families where it may be hereditary. Exposures, foods, cellphones, high voltage transmission towers, etc have not been proven to increase the risk of getting leukemia.

If the doctor decides that signs and/or symptoms suspicious for leukemia are present, he/she will usually start by ordering a blood test.  If the blood findings support a diagnosis of leukemia then a bone marrow study is also necessary.
