Yes, safe: Clindamycin is safe in pregnancy and is the normal treatment of BV in pregnant women. Your doctor would not have prescribed it if it were unsafe (assuming she knows you are pregnant).

About 3-5 days: Antibiotic treatment for bacterial vaginosis infections take about 3-5 days to start feeling better.  It is important to finish the whole antibiotic treatment even if the vaginal symptoms go away, or the infection is more likely to return.  Also any antibiotic for BV cures it about 85% of the time, so it doesn't always work.  Sometimes the infection comes back and needs to be treated again.

Why?: The treatment for bacterial vaginosis is Metronidazole for 7 days. Clindamycin is also a treatment by itself but not to be used together or one after the other. If you were given Metronidazole 2 grams one time use, that's another story. I would follow the prescriber's instructions in that case.

Yes/Off label use: Yes Clindamycin 300mg twice daily for 7 days is an effective alternative to Metronidazole for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis caused by gardnerella vaginalis. It is important that a proper diagnosis be made by your doctor. Be sure to complete the antibiotic course. Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea/vomitting. Report any uncontrollable diarrhea/severe abdoninal pain.

Should be fine: Since it is a cream, very little is absorbed into your system - most of it stays in the top few layers of the epidermis and dermis (your skin), and/or sits on the surface.  It should be effective, but you should return to your doctor if it isn't helping.  Good luck!
