Antihistamines: In general the class of antihistamines that includes Loratadine and Cetirizine is well tolerated, safe and effective.  While most people tend to have a better effect with one or the other, there really is no significant risks if these 2 are taken together.  If allergies are not controlled, an allergist can develop a better treatment plan as other more effective medications are available.

Antihistamines: You may take them indefininately, but thats like using a bandaid to correct your problem sooner orlater you will need surgery to correct your problem.

my left ear blocks when i lay down at night and then unblocks when i wake up.  it just started 3 days ago.  last year i had etd in that ear.  the only thing i did differently recently is take a claritin.  if its etd again can claritin make it worse?

No: Clartin will not hurt but will  not help either.  If your left ear is block only at night, I suspect that the problem is not from your ear but from your jaw particularly if you clench or grind your teeth during sleep. Consult your dentist.

if i stop taking claritin (loratadine) will the side effects go away overnight and by that i mean in a 24 hour period? or will it take a couple of days for all the medicine to be out of my system?

Claritin (loratadine): You do not mention what are your side effects. The antihistaminic effect of the medication may persist for up to 5 days, if you took Claritin (loratadine) d, the decongestant side effects will subside within 24 hours.

i have hives (it was triggered by mosquito bites 10 days ago). im taking claritin once a day in the morning and it seems to help. but it feels like it gets worked out by late afternoon. can i take a second dose in the evenings?

Yes: Loratidine products are some of the weakest oral antihistamines on the market. But a single 10mg daily dose may not meet the needs of every individual; it is safe to take a second dose. You may also experience better results with OTC products that contain cetirizine or levo-cetirizine as these have a faster onset of action and are generally much more effective than loratidine products.

Strong allergies: There is always something better but usually it is by prescription.  The over the counter antihistamines help some and usually would work pretty quickly.  However you may have stronger allergies and may need something like a nasal steroid or possibly allergy testing.  Everyone is different with allergies and there isn't a one size fits all solution.

i'm having autonomic testing scheduled.  i have to stop claritin (loratadine) for 3 days.  can i take fluticasone/flonase spray or do i need to stop that too?

No: Only medications that impair sweating such as tricyclic antidepressants and older antihistamines.  Steriod nasal sprays are no problem.

Nasacort (triamcinolone) or sudafed: Although there are other possibilities for the symptoms, they may be due to frontal sinus pressure.  An oral decongestant like Pseudoephedrine (sudafed) or a nasacort (triamcinolone) (an OTC nasal steroid) can help sinus pressure.

If : If this is simple cold yes you could try simple remedies over the counter granted you understand that most of them do cause sedation during the day.
