i ovulated on saturday night, and my period started yesterday (thursday) so i got my period 5 days post ovulation. why would this happen?

Short luteal phase: the luteal phase is the time from ovulation to the onset of your menses and average is 12-16 days. your recent cycle was short.  the ovary produced low progesterone during that cycle.  there are many causes for this and if you monitor your cycle and find that there is a consistent pattern, I recommend that you consult your gynecologist.

cycle usually 21-28 days. i am on cycle day 30(20 days post ovulation), had spotting on cycle day 20, have had 2 negative tests but still no period ?

Wait 10-14 days and: repeat the test.  You might get your period by then, or if not maybe the test is then positive.  If still no period and no positive tests, either wait another 2 weeks or see a doctor for more detailed testing to be done, usually a blood test.

Ovarian cramps ?'s: At "11 days after ovulation" , a drop in estrogen may occur leading to cramps, indicating that menstruation is about to occur. If pregnancy is possible, and your period does not begin at expected time, obtain a serum HCG test to be certain.

Pregnancy tests?: Home pregnancy tests are very accurate and not affected by foods, herbs, common illnesses, sexually transmitted diseases, or medications. A correctly done urine test gives a reliable result by 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have happened) or 1 week after missing a period. If done sooner, a positive result is likely real, but a negative result may be due to testing too soon.

After missed period: Conception, as defined by the generation of a fertilized ovum, occurs within day or so of the sex. However, it takes about two weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG to produce a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex.

12-14 days: After ovulation the follicle (egg sac of the ovary) is called a corpus luteum.  It produces Progesterone to change the uterine lining to support implantation.  If you are not pregnant the corpus luteum will die off in 12-14 days.  If you are pregnant the HCG produced by the placenta keeps the Progesterone going to support the pregnancy.

If you got...: ..your period 2 days after intercourse, pregnancy is unlikely.  But no birth control is 100% effective for preventing pregnancy, so if there is any question, a pregnancy test is recommended.
