It will vary: This depends on how long it takes for the mono to resolve.  The spleen is composed of lymphoid tissue, which commonly swells during mono.  The doctor will assess the progress of mono often times by examining the spleen.  As the mono resolves, so will the size of the spleen.  This takes between two weeks and two months or more.

Unlikely: Don't chance it. You're probably losing weight from the mono alone, if that's why you're working out.

No: The spleen enlargement in mono is not painful , neither in the beginning of the illness nor late in the disease.

When : When a person has mono the spleen tends to enlarge. For this reason doctors tell their patients to take it easy and not play sports because there is a chance the spleen could rupture; this typically happens  if you sustain a hard blow to the abdomen or fall. Once the mono resolves the spleen starts to go back to it's regular size.
You should be fine as long as you take it easy. 
If you develop abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting seek medical attention right away.

Enlarged spleen: Bed rest won't have any effect:  no benefit, no harm. Walking should be fine. But if you remain concerned, or for advice about more vigorous activity, discuss with the doctor caring for you (or the person with mono).

Should be safe: Most symptoms, including the splenomegaly, resolve by 2 weeks, which is generally considered the 'safe to resume normal activities" time frame.  The fatigue, as you've noticed, tends to persist; it can last for a few months, without any other symptoms.

: If you have mononucleosis, your doctor should have examined your abdomen to determine whether your spleen is enlarged. Contact sports probably are little risk for rupture unless the spleen is quite large. However, your performance is likely to be reduced anyway, so if it doubt, it's probably best to take a sports break until you have recovered. Good luck.

why does mono only affect the spleen?

Accepted Answer

Affects whole body: Mono, caused by ebv virus, affects the whole body, not just the spleen. The spleen, lymph nodes (glands), and tonsils are all part of the immune system, and all get quite enlarged as they react to the ebv infection. Sometimes the tonsils get so big that a mono patient has trouble swallowing.
