i believe i have a 2nd degree burn in my mouth, but my jaw and teeth hurt in the same area.  it's been over a week. what should i do?

See a doctor / denti: I'm not clear if u accidentally drank hot liquids or why u think u have a 2nd degree burn. In any case, u shd get checked out by a doctor who can do an exam. Make sure u keep up ur fluid intake, no matter how painful, as ur health will get worse if u don't. Only drink cold liquids, it may help w/ pain &amp; swelling. Yes.: Not all burns are painful. Wash and cover the area daily and watch out for redness swelling and pain. Seek attention if that occurs.

Second degree burns: Are defined by the presence of blisters, but can range from very shallow to very deep. In general, the best treatment (in my opinion) is to remove the blisters to prevent the possibility of a closed space infection. Wash with soap and water, pat dry and apply Bacitracin ointment and a dry dressing 2-3 times/day. If increasing pain, drainage or redness or if not healed in two weeks, see a doctor.

: Do not pop the blisters as the overlying skin provides protection against infection. Keep the area clean, apply antibiotic ointment daily, protect the site by covering loosely with a sterile nonstick gauze held in place with paper tape only. See a physician if spreading redness develops.

Do not pop it: Protect it and try to keep it from breaking.  If it does rupture dres it with a non stick dressing large enough to cover the area, if signs of infection then  develop see your doctor.

Tanning after burn: Once your skin has returned to normal (normal color, normal texture) its considered 'safe' to tan but you should never over do it as you risk long term consequences if you do.

Accepted Answer

Blister: It is better to leave the blister with protective dressing. Will need to avoid infection. If the blister breaks on it's own, will need a non adherent dressing for further healing.
