how long after laparoscopy gallbladder surgery can i fly?

Passenger? pilot?: I have had patients (mostly students) who fly home to family the same day or the next day after surgery.  I generally tell my patients who pilot planes to "stay grounded" until they don't need pain medications to be comfortable.  You most certainly cannot fly if you are on narcotics prescribed after surgery.

Could be normal: make sure you are taking deep breaths  to open up your lungs, check for any signs of redness around incisions, and check for leg swelling/pain.  If fever increases call your doc.

: I would think that would depend on your mood, and the fact that your wound is healing well. I doubt that there is a set time to abstain from sex because you had laparoscopic gall bladder surgery.

Are you sure?: Laparoscopy doesn't damage nerves during removal of the gall bladder. What makes you think that happened? I have done hundreds of these procedures and never heard of nerve damage as a side effect or complication of this procedure.

i lifted something heavy a week and 1/2 after gallbladder surgery via laparoscopy. very sore around main cut. what could it be?

Hernia: Skin intact, but underlying tissue -fascia can disrupt. Be examined to be sure.
Likely just sore.

Could be stitch : Some times the dissolving stitch may be causing , you will be fine go back to your surgeon for follow up visit.

i had a lap.gallbladder surgery i have 13-24 surgical clips in my liver, is it a normal thing to have in after that surgery?#nqlu in laproscopic surgeries they cannot use stiches so i have been told since, they only staple.

It : It is normal to have clips in the area below your liver known as the gallbladder fossa after a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal).  13 or 24 clips is a lot, however.  Normally, most surgeons will have 2-3 clips on what is called the cystic duct stump and on the cystic artery, making 4-6 clips normal.  That being said, every patient and every case is different.  It is possible that you had what is called "aberrant anatomy" such that you either had extra blood vessels that required more clips, or that you had some large venous sinuses under your liver that were bleeding during surgery and required more clips.  
If you are more than a few weeks out from your surgery and are doing fine then this probably isn't anything to worry about.  In most cases, the complications associated with having your gallbladder removed laparoscopically occur almost immediately after surgery and are readily apparent.  There are some less common problems, such as narrowing of your bile duct or occlussion of your hepatic artery that can show up later.  If these things happen, they do tend to be associated with cases that are considered more difficult.  If you are concerned you should ask the surgeon who did your procedure to explain to you how your surgery went and if you should be concerned, but i suspect you have little to be worried about.

Double check: If your doctor placed a dressing at that site then they probably want to keep it clean and protected.  Double check with your doctor to see how long they want the dressing in place.  Usually a few days is all that is necessary.

7-10 days: In general, i advise my patients to take 7-10 days before returning to work.  Most people can control their pain without narcotic medication after 1-2 days.

what are some complications i may have if i return to work three weeks after lap. gallbladder surgery. my job is strenuous and has a lot of heavy lift?

Accepted Answer

6 weeks: The usual recommendation is to wait 6 weeks from the time of the surgery before doing heavy lifting. This is to avoid the risk of a hernia in one of the incisions, and if you are lifting too much too soon you put yourself at risk. A hernia would be a painful swelling/lump in the incision, usually disappears if you lie down. Treatment for a hernia is another surgery.
