how long is too long for a kidney stone to pass before medical intervention is needed? i started taking alfuzosin a few weeks ago to help. im female & the stone is currently in my bladder. i was diagnosed with the stone at the end of july.

Depends: How big is the stone? Do you have any symptoms? Could you have passed the stone without your being aware of it? If you do not have any blood in urine and no infection, you may leave it alone. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.

: Sometimes it does not pass out but most of the time it does with that size. However, the timing is unpredictable.
If you do not know what type of your stone is, remember to use the strain to catch the stone for analysis which will help to prevent the future stone.
Go to ER if you suddenly cannot void because the stone is impacted in the urethra.

Lithotripsy: 4mm?  Not moved in 4 days?  Could still pass, but not likely at the uvj.

A few things: The likelyhood of passing a stone depends on certain factors. Larger stones and those higher up in the ureter are less likely to pass. Some medicines like tamsulosin or Nifedipine may help and analgesia is often important. Staying hydrated is usually recommended although overdoing this with an obstructing stone could cause problems. It's important to follow up to assure that the stone has passed.

Bladder stone: No telling how long.  4mm stone should pass but will be painful.  If you do not pass it in next 5-7 days, discuss urologist going and getting it with a scope.  Best of luck with this.  OUCH!! Dr R

Kidney: stones should be evaluated with appropriate blood/urine tests which can be made MUCH SIMPLER if you can "catch" one of YOUR stones!!!!

my kidney stone is 4mm x 1cm long.had it ct scanned & it has an inch of ureter to still pass thru. is it going to pass to my bladder?  taking flomax (tamsulosin)

Sounds: Like it has a chance.If the pain is too much call your urologist and they can go after it and temporarily stent your ureter. Be sure to drink fluid to flush it if you want to pass it. Do you have enough pain meds at home?
