DEXA scan: You do not mention your age. The first thing is to see your doctor. A DEXA scan (bone density test) will tell you if your bones are more likely to fracture. Then meds can help to strengthen them.

i just suffered a non-traumatic rib fracture after 4 years of on and off steroid use.  1) should i worry about my bone density at the age of 26 with the chronic steroid use, and 2) what should i avoid while my rib fracture heals as i am an active physical

Talk to your MD: Chronic steroid use is a major risk factor for bone density loss so talk to your physician about appropriate screening & prevention (secondary).  You can also discuss allowable activities with your fracture.

7 years ago i suddenly got the most intense pain i've ever experienced in my left rib cage that lasted for 6-8 weeks. pain improved a bit but the soreness never went away over that one rib. can a rib fracture really cause this long lasting problems?

Yes: If there was a rib fracture, it takes time to heal. Take Vitamin D supplements and calcium. An imaging study to confirm that there is no mass and that the fracture is healing well is advised.

May not have healed : Usually broken ribs heal in 2-3 months but occasionally it may  take little longer as long as it continues to improve and it is not getting worse in terms  of pain just give it some more time  to heal completely hopefully it will resolve soon good luck if the pain is getting worse however then talk to your doctor so he may check it out.
