The half life for elimination in the ueine is 5 to 7 hours, regardless of dose, and may vary depending on your kidney function. It is not generally tested for during drug screening since it is not a narcotic.

Gabapentin: Gabapentin is short acting. The effect is dose related. Steady state in your body will take about 72 hours at present dose. Full effect may take 7-10 days. Your doctor needs to hear from you how you are doing at present dose, whatever it is.  Your doctor will establish goals.

Patience: The medication will eventually metabolize out of her system. Be sure to contact her MD immediately to inform of the side effect to get the best advice on stopping the medication as I don't know what medical condition is being treated. Emotional side effects - including suicidal thoughts - are uncommon but can happen. Stay with her - reassure her - and encourage sleep.

: The dose needs upwards titration over several days to weeks.  Taking it three times daily, efficacy should be achieved within a short time.  At a dose maximum of 1800 mg/day, if not successful, would switch to a dopamine agonist.

Several : One of the most commonly used sleep aids is trazodone (deseryl), it is effective with negligible weight gain issues, melatonin has been used successfully. For short term use, Ambien and Lunesta (eszopiclone) have been helpful as well. Your doctor will be the best to ask about which one is the best match for you. There is no medication that "fits all" 
feel better.

Good Question: Most substances to be addictive must be shown to be associated with a Dopamine release in the brain's reward centers.   I'm not aware of evidence for that with Gabapentin but nonetheless it is for some a potent anti-anxiety agent, so it doesn't surprise me that addictive like patterns can emerge.   If that's the case it is time to look for other ways to safely and effectively address the anxiety.
