Not needed: In general,  fluid behind the ear drum by itself doesn't need an "antiseptic" or antibiotic. If the fluid is infected that is a different story and antibiotics can be helpful. If fluid formed because of a nasal or sinus infection then again an antibiotic can help. Most antibiotics in common use such as amoxil, augmentin, ceftin, (cefuroxime) Bactrim etc... Are helpful.

Confusing question: I am not aware of any antiseptic drugs used in the treatment of otitis media. However, we do use antibiotics.Those used vary by the age of the patient, the germ expected, personal allergy history and other factors derived by an office visit.Your pcp can sort this out. This site is not a substitute for an office evaluation when indicated.

Tinnitus and Otitis: Yes. Generally the ringing in the ears will subside once the otitis abates and the fluid is absorbed. Tinnitus is very annoying, so let's hope it disappears sooner than later!

Usually yes: Otitis media is an ear infection.  In bacterial ear infections, it can take a month for the fluid in the ear to completely resolve.  The fluid may be causing the ringing.  If the ringing does not go away, you should be re-evaluated.

Ear exam: Both conditions can look the same with an otoscope.

Accepted Answer

Within 3 months: Typically ~90% of patients will clear the effusion within 3 months.  Taking medications such as a topical decongestant (nasal steroids) may speed the recovery.  If the effusion doesn't clear, then you should see an ENT to make sure the eustachian tube isn't blocked.  An ear tube or a simple drainage procedure may be needed.  For most patients w/o any other ear issues, the ringing should stop.

Doctor's advice: Follow the advice and recommendations of the doctor who diagnosed and is treating the problem. If not under care of an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist), ask your doctor about a referral. Good luck.

Time usually works: If it doesn't resolve with time, then the best way is to use a steroid nasal spray for 2-3 weeks.  If that doesn't help then antibiotics might help or as a last resort, pe tubes from an ent.

Accepted Answer

Otitis media: Pop your ears on a regular basis 30 or 40 times a day. This is about all you can do. If your doctor gave you a decongestant then take it. You can try pseudo-fed as well. Good luck and feel better!
