can a pulled muscle take weeks to heal? hurt top upper back between shoulder and spine 16 days ago stretching. was very painful to move head & arm. now not as painful, but feels tight/stiff when move head. should i be concerned of something serious?

: You may have sustained some microtears of ribcage muscles which take longer to heal than a simple strain. See your physician or an orthopedic specialist if continued discomfort isn't gradually improving

Tincture of time: A pulled muscle is the presence of "micro-tears" among some of the fibers within that muscle.  They cause a certain amount of swelling, which causes the pain.  Depending on the severity of the injury and the age and medical status of the patient, these symptoms can last from a few days to a few weeks.  Allow it to heal rather than continue to injure it with more activation of the muscle.

Arm pain: Sounds like biceps strain, but it may also be triceps, deltoid, or referred from rotator cuff. All are made of collagen which generally takes 6 weeks to heal. It depends upon severity of tear. Check with your orhtopedic, sports, or rehab doc.

Ice it 1st 48 hrs: And baby the arm.  Then heat or ice after.  Use Ibuprofen or naproxen, and/or a muscle relaxant for pain.  Starting using the arm more like normal after 1st 2 days, gradually if possible.  Avoid the activity that pulled the muscle!

Yes: When you strain your muscles in your neck and upper shoulder they will irritate the nerve that runs through there to your arm. That is the mechanism or your pain down your arm.

Arm pain: Burning pain in the upper arm may relate to referred pain from the neck and/or shoulder. Please have this evaluated in the office.

Probably: If it is a simple muscle pull or strain it will get better in a few weeks.  Sometimes the facet joints make noise (pop) but that is usually harmless.

Absolutely: Your doc should be able to clarify. It you are able to reproduce the pain by pushing or moving or twisting, your pain is likely musculoskeletal. If you have a history of cancer there is a possibility that they may be connected, otherwise it would be unlikely for the pain to be related to cancer and an evaluation will help in dissipating the anxiety generated by your symptoms.

i'm 17 my arm goes left arm goes numb for no apparent reason. no heavy lifting so its not a pulled muscle going on for over a year.

Check: if u get numbness without any reason like pressure on it, should check with ur md

Topical salicylate: Topical salicylates such as BenGay can help with pain from sore muscles.  It has nothing to do with heat.
