If you are getting hives frequently, you are allergic to something - perhaps a soap or detergent, for example.  You should see your doctor for a thorough history, blood work, and possible allergy testing.

Many options.: It would be unusual to be truly allergic to an allergy medication, but assuming this is correct, options include other antihistamines (claritin, allegra, zyrtec) or oral steroids.  If one is experiencing nasal symptoms, there are a variety of prescription nasal sprays that can also be very helpful.  Best to consult with your doctor to see which options are best.

No: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is just a short acting antihistamine that will help the hives and itching only for a short period of time., maybe a few hours. Longer acting antihistamines like Zyrtec or Allegra will help, but you might need more than one per day. You should see an allergist for further evaluation and management, especially if hives continue despite antihistamine therapy

Don't think so: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) usually is taken every 6 hours.  It generally lasts 6-8 hours.  Other factors include how big a dose was taken, and how many hives are coming out on the skin.  For example, having large numbers of hives continuing to appear may mean a need for a bigger dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) plus adding other medications.

Shell fish allergy : Do not treat your allergy carelessly.   If you want to test it then go to a qualified allergist.   Take your shrimp along (no touching of course) and you are the doctor can have lunch.   If you react you will need epinephrine, oxygen, and then Benedryl to recover.   If you don't react you and your doctor enjoyed lunch.  Some doctors may not want you to try due to the risk.   Get an epipen too.
