: Bleeding after IUD removal should be transient. Any bleeding you are now having will be related to your current birth control and the timing of the IUD removal with regard to your period.

ive tried bcps, iuds, nexplanon, the patch, the ring.. basically everything but shots, all varying hormone levels. was fine for 3 years on the pill, but now every single birth control makes me bleed 4+ weeks nonstop. why?!?!?!

Evaluation: I would recommend an evaluation by a gynecologist. This could be primarily a hormone issue, but could be associated with a structural issue- fibroid etc. I would make arrangements to see a provider.

<5 mm = good : In general after menopause an endometrial thickness < 5 mm is unlikely to indicate cancer. > 25 mm is very concerning. In between is indeterminate and a biopsy would be the next steps.

Leave it if you can: An IUD can make the next 2-3 cycles more uncomfortable and cause more bleeding.  The post-operative period after an abortion is uncomfortable.  Start taking ibuprofen or Naproxen for the next 24-48 hours as the directions state on the box.  That should help.

If : If you think the string is longer and that the iud may be coming out - then you need to call your ob/gyne right away.  Sometimes this just happens.  Do not try to re-position the iud yourself. Yes: The copper IUD is associated with heavier periods and longer periods. Some women do experience cramping with an IUD between periods as well as spotting between periods. Other women do not notice a difference. If this continues and is bothersome, you may need to consider a different option for birth control.

3 months: Usually, patients see irregular bleeding for the first 3 months of use.  After three months, patients may see no period or spotting for periods.

Not good - need dr.: If you iud has 'vanished' you need to have some imaging done (sonogram to evaluate the uterus/ovaries, and look for the iud in the uterus) and maybe ct scan to see if the iud has perforated through the uterine wall, into the abdominal cavity.  Need to be checked for pregnancy as well.  This problem definitely needs a visit with the gyn.

5-10 years : Paraguard (copper-based) & the Mirena (levonorgestrel) (progestin based) are effective for 10 & 5 years respectively. If you're referring to the side effects of spotting or cramping, this usually last a week or two & with menstrual cycles for the first few months. If you have problems beyond this, see your doc for evaluation. It may be poorly placed, extruding, or simply not for you. Good luck.
