Varies: Malaria reactivation from latent infection form plasmodium ovale  or plasmodium vivax can occur three years after an infection. Symptoms in patients with subclinical parasitemia have been reported decades after the initial infection.

Lengthy: Untreated, if not dead, they may last a lifetime.  You develop low grade immunity and compensatory mechanisms to deal with damage, but this is seldom cured on its own.  Treated appropriately, symptoms will begin to regress within hours of initiation of therapy, but if not fully treated for the extraerythrocytic stages of disease, may recur up to 20 yrs or more after therapy for acute illness.

See below: Depending on the type of malaria, some can hide out in the liver and pop out again later down the road; if you are given a medication called Primaquine to treat these (in addition the treatment for active malaria), you shouldn't have recurrences after.  Multiple recurrences would suggest reinfection, especially if you live in an endemic area.

If you have recently traveled to an area known for malaria or other unusual infections, go see your primary care provider or health department. A blood test will answer your question to exclude malaria.

good day. i have been on malateq malaria tablets for the last 7 days. i have been vomiting everyday since and i am constantly nauseous. i did read the side effects and it says vomiting is one. i am however worried that it is my liver.

Malaria: The tablets usually cause vomiting by upsetting stomach. Do you have evidence for jaundice?  I would let the person who prescribed the medication know about your symptoms. If vomiting

High fever: Your child needs a complete workup, including complete blood count, esr, CRP and blood cultures.If no source for the fever can be found see a rheumatologist or hematologist for further evaluation. Good luck!
