Viral infection: In toddlers, viral infections can last 10-14 days.
However, if bruising is noted, rash occurs after 5 days,
continued high fevers, should be checked by pedi MD to rule out other causes, Kawasaki's disease, bacterial infections, etc.

2  Sinusitis
3. Any of the numerous cold viruses mutating into 3 week duration.

can you give a 7 yr old clindamyacin to help get over a 9 day old fever/cold, cough has gotten stronger. how long does a viral infection last?

My : My general rule of thumb in my clinic is that a cold that worsens after a week instead of improving needs to be re-evaluated.  Most viral infections tend to improve after a week on their own.  A worsening cough and fever could be an indication of a bacterial super-infection such as pneumonia, sinusitis or bronchitis.  You should have the child seen by their doctor.  Clindamycin is an antibiotic which works for some infections, but not for others, so an exam is very important so he/she gets the correct treatment.  Do not use the Clindamycin unless instructed to by the child's doctor.

fever since tuesday, no cold or cough. fever lower now. had tests done, wbc is 3.3 and lymphocytes is 15. dr said it is a viral infection. last month, had tests too due to cystitis wbc12.5 lymphocyte 19. are these numbers something to worry about?

: Classically lymphocyte percentage is are higher in viral infections.but a lower wbc, such as yours,does suggest a viral infection At this time there are no localized symptoms such as sore throat, cough,diarrhea characteristic of simple viral infections. Rest,drink lots fluids,take Tylenol as needed. Follow up cbc&amp; differential cell count can be repeated after convalescence. Notify your MD as neede

Needs evaluation: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful response without additional history, physical examination and may be lab tests. If the symptoms have lasted two week, it is time to see your doctor.

Fever.: I know that you may get varied responses on this. However, i would suggest that if you actually have a fever that you rest & hydrate well. If you had a common cold with just sniffles - i would say go for it as long as you didn't push it too hard. By the way for your dry throat you can gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water).  Hope you feel better soon.

Not unusual: It's not unusual for a viral infection to last a week or longer, esp. the strains currently circulating. Antibiotics will not help and do more harm than good. Fever is how the body fights infection so suppressing the fever with Tylenol (acetaminophen) will prolong her illness. I advise Umcka, a herb proven to help many viral infections, and 500 mg of Vit C 2-3x/day. Vit D3 1000 iu/day boosts immune function.

Patience: Hydrate, keep comfortable and give it 3-5 days to get better, if no worse than when seen.
