Most often: For pain control +/- if the stone is too large to be expected to pass on its own. If the patient has an obstructing stone and superimposed infection this is also a potential reason for hospitalization.

Yes: If the 6 mm stone has been in your ureter for that long, it is a problem.  If the stone is actually in your kidney and nonobstructing, having in there for six weeks is not  significant.

Ultrasound: What did your doctors recommend? Some stones easily pass but others do not and can result in complications (pain, infection, bleeding, etc). If your doctors advised ultrasound treatment (also known as shock wave lithotripsy) you should do it. It's pretty easy, with low risk of side effects. Or see a urologist. Tamsulosin: generally medication is cleared from the system and for half-lives.  with a half-life of 15 hours that means tamsulosin should be cleared from your system within three days

have had 20 kidney stones in 2 years. i had one analyzed- the report said "the specimen composed primarily of fatty proteinaceous material not typically associated with calculus composition. no crystalline material id'd." what might this mean?

Not a stone: That specimen was not a stone but other tissue. I assume you've been evaluated by a urologist but a nephrologist would conduct a workup to look for disorders of metabolism including hyperparathyroidism as a history of 20 kidney stones suggests a metabolic abnormality. In the meantime strain all urine in case you pass another stone that can be analyzed. Drink more water.

Probably not: Good news! usually patients go home the day of stone surgery.  
Stones can be broken up  in several ways:

extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (eswl) - focused energy from the outside of your body.   

Endoscopically - through a camera with the help of a laser.

Percutaneous approach - for large stones in the kidney

open/laparoscopic surgery - rarely used, typically when all other methods fail.

Ask ur Urologist: If he would give u meds stronger than lortab which u r currently taking. Antiinflammatory meds,  muscle relaxers and injectable painmeds are other options. God bless u!
