4-10 days: You should wait until your body has completly eliminated the medication.  This is dependent on the dose, the half life and your bodies ability to eliminate the drug.  If sun toxic then safe to wait about 10 days, wear at least a 30 sunblock when you go out.

If you've had it before and know you are susceptible, or if still concerned, you probably can go in the sun with a strong sun block cream. Doxycycline sun rash: Doxycycline absorbs UV-A, so if you're outdoors when the med is in your system, you could wind up with a photosensitive rash. That rash can be nasty -so it's good to be careful. The half-life of the drug is about 20 hrs, and it binds to proteins in the body. Thus, after about 5 half-lives since you last took the drug, 'all of it' should be out of your system. That's 4-5 days as the other docs said

DOXYCYCLINE IS A PHOTOSENSITIZER.
I SUGGEST NO SUN EXPOSURE WHILE TAKING IT.

Be Careful: Doxycycline (tetracycline) will make you skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase your risk of skin irritation (rash, itching, redness, sunburn, etc.).  You should stay protected while in the sun.

Individual: if the doxycycline hasn't sensitized your skin from general use, then careful and persistent use of sunscreen should work just fine. 
if concerned check with your about another med fpr your condition

: Although both these drugs can cause photosensitivity, it's an uncommon reaction and most people can have full sun exposure without problems. If you have had it before, be careful, but even the, evening exposure probably carries little risk. If in doubt, discuss with your doctor.
