Yes: There is a decline in sperm number and function as a man gets older.  However, there are usually some sperm present throughout a man's life.  There are higher rates of birth defects also after age 50.  A swedish population study showed a young woman married to a young man has a higher chance for conception than a young woman married to an older man.

The process of conception is over a dozen physical and chemical processes in you and your partner. Each of these needs to be specifically evaluated. After failing to conceive for one year it is time for a complete evaluation of you both at the local fertility clinic.

Not too scary: An infertility consult for men is alot like an annual physical exam by your pcp.  Questions will be directed to general health as well as things known to affect fertility.  His physical exam is likely to be head to toe, examining the genitals and the prostate.  Usually the first visit is to set a path of further testing (semen, blood, u/s) and then followup for management options.

not from the mumps: He may or may not be fertile, but mumps as a kid is rarely if ever a cause of any testicle problems in kids or fertility consequences to an adult. Mumps is known to cause testicular inflammation in adults, but even then does not always impair fertility.

No: There is not an over the counter medication to enhance male sperm production. Have him see a Fertility MD/Urologist for a discussion of his circumstance and possible medication or other assistance.

Yes. Not a good idea: We can't make your husband do a test he doesn't want to but it's a bad idea to 'skip' testing for him. In couples who aren't getting pregnant after trying for a year or longer, almost half the time there is a sperm issue (40-50%). It could be the only problem or occur along with problems on the woman's side. A semen analysis is a good test to do early on. Most clinics can let him collect at home.
