Hormones: Prostate enlargement is a normal process of aging in men. It is under the control of hormones (testosterone, dht) and genetics. The degree of enlargement is variable from person to person and the symptoms it produces is highly variable from person to person, even if they have the same size prostate gland.

: Most men will get BPH when getting older. You do not need a routine rectal exam for enlarged prostate unless you have urinary symptoms which are usually called LUTS - Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms. You are too young for your concern, concentrate on your healthy diet, exercise and education. Take care.

Not for BPH: Neostigmine is often used to treat neuromuscular disease such as myasthenia gravis--and has many side effects. It is not for bph.  There hasn't been new drug lately for bph, last one was rapaflo (silodosin) (approved 2008) and combo of older meds (jalyn-2010), and Cialis (2012) as an adjunct treatment for bph. I certainly hope you don't have BPH at age 21. Consult doc if you have concern/problem. Good luck.

No: BPH is benign swelling of the prostate gland as a man ages. It is under hormonal control and will continue to enlarge over time. If urinary symptoms arise, then treatment options inlcude observtaion, medical therapy, or surgery. There are no home remedies once can take to stop or prevent the enlargement. See your urologist if symptoms persist or bothersome.

Yes.: Flomax (tamsulosin) is part of a family of drugs called alpha-blockers that relax the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow & symptoms. Other drugs in this group are terazosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin, & silodosin. Another family of drugs for BPH are 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, such as Finasteride and dutasteride.  These shrink the prostate and reduce episodes of urine retention.
