Goal: normal motion: Prior to ACL reconstructive surgery, it is advisable to have a knee that is "ready for surgery". Maximization of these three variables preoperatively help limit the morbidity of surgery. Physical therapy can help this process.

In general, therapy should last several months.

ACL rehabilitation: We believe all patients benefit from great pt after ACL treatment.  It is best to mobilize the tissues early to reduce scar formation and to increase range of motion.  Athletes lose less muscle and proprioception if training starts on day one after surgery.

Depends: There is not one answer for everyone. A supervised physical therapy program removes any doubts and can produce excellent results. Laws vary by state: Always discuss postoperative activity allowances with your surgeon. Many states have basic impaired driver laws to help guide this decision. Several basic parameters can help. You should be off daytime narcotics, able to safely and efficiently enter/exit the vehicle, and your reaction times to move your foot from gas to brake pedal should be normalized. Right knee surgery will require more time.

Roughly 6 months: This is not my strong suite, as i work with children exclusively. But it is important to rehabilitate under the direct supervision of a skilled physical therapist. Typically the rehab is most intense in the first 6 weeks focused on restoring range of motion. Home exercise program is essential as well. Then several weeks of return to function and eventually sport.
