Not a concern: Rheumatoid arthritis is a strikingly different entity from systemic lupus and if you are sure this is what you have, you need to work hard managing this rather than lupus. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause modest hemolysis by hypersplenism but not the catastrophic autoimmune hemolysis sometimes seen in lupus.

i have dry, red, itchy skin & am concerned about lupus, thanks to an unfortunate google search. can iron deficiency/anemia cause skin problems & itch?

You may be onto: something as the most common cause of itching can be iron deficiency anemia. However, without more info, this is only speculative. We need your medical, family, social, sexual, surgical, meds/supplement histories to put all the pieces together. Do see your doctor and discuss this. A simple lab test can help!

A c reactive protein: Measurement does correlate with inflammation/disease activity in sle. If your doc tests you periodically you may see a correlation with lower levels when you feel better, but we treat patients not numbers.

i'm an 18 year old male with severe thrombocytopenia and anemia discovered on a cbc. bone marrow biopsy was normal. cat was normal. no viruses. no offending drugs. no lupus. any ideas of a diagnosis?

Possibilities...: How low were plts and hemoglobin?
What ethnic group are you?
Do you have a big spleen (if not done, need ultrasound or ct scan to look for big spleen which could cause the low counts)
any other lab abnormalities?
Have the conts been changing?

Avoid blood clots: Your mother seems to be quite ill and it is not up to you to avoid her from getting blood clots, it is up to her physicians (p). Speak to them about your concerns and see if they can answer your question(s). The p's know your mother the best and are more familiar with her condition than any one else. Good luck.

Yes: ANA is just a marker that we look for to screen for lupus.  It is not perfect.  Just because it is negative does not mean you do not have lupus.  Also, just because it is positive does not mean you have it either.

Tests: These tests need monitoring but cannot establish a diagnosis. You need to have them followed up if your joint issues continue to occur. See a rheumatologist.

Hard to tell.: Joint pain and anemia can have many causes and may or may not be connected.  You will need Sed Rate and/or CRP to see if you have active inflammation.  There may be other tests needed to determine if it's RA or other causes.  Get to an arthritis specialist if possible.  Good luck!
