Not really: You can start your next pack of birth control pills and this will stop you over the next few days. This is likely to be the same as if you just took your pills normally. The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is a great birth control method and it often stops periods.

For medical reasons: We will stop periods with hormonal therapy for medical reasons before it starts and sometimes when they  are extremely heavy. However, there is no practical way for you to stop your period on your own once it has started.

Patience or OCP's: Your period will stop as your estrogen level increases with normal progression into the new menstrual cycle. One the period starts there will be blood and tissue that must be passed before the period ends. You could potentially shorten the period by taking estrogen - that would require starting the birth control pill to attain an estrogen level adequate to overcome the menstrual bleeding.

Hormonal control: Birth control pills can be used to suppress periods but not instantaneously.    Change pad or tampon frequently and try some ibuprofen for cramps
