Not unusually long: It takes an average of 6 months to conceive which means about half of women take more than 6 months. It is not considered to be of any concern unless you try for a year without success. If in a year you are not pregnant then your partner should have his sperm count checked. If that is ok then i would advise you be evaluated for hypothyroidism first, and of course see a gynecologist too. Good luck!

Many factors: For many couples it may take anywhere from 6 to 8 months to conceive , even if there were no known barriers. If you go 6 months with unprotected intercourse and are still not pregnant you may want to get checked.

Fertility testing: After one year of trying an infertility evaluation is warranted. There are 3 basic tests. 1. A semen analysis will check the sperm 2. A HSG Xray will make sure your tubes are open. 3. A progesterone test will make sure that you are ovulating.

See the gynecologist: Infertility is defined as one year of unprotected intercourse without achieving pregnancy.  We usually begin work up for women at this point and sooner for women 35 and over.  Do not lose hope.  Sometimes it is very simple to treat and sometimes it requires more work but there is always hope.

Midcycle: Avoid having intercourse everyday. Chart your cycles. Ovulation occurs 14 days before the period starts, so the period from end of menses and ovulation is variable. So if you know your cycles oare 24-day; then sex between days 9-12 are best; if your cycles are 26-28days long, then sex between days 12-16 are best.

Some basics: The average wait for a desired pregnancy is 6 mo (wks-1  yr) in fertile women. If you have gone past a year with no success it would be reasonable for both parents to have some basic fertility work done. If a problem is identified it can be treated or your options explored.
